Lehto & Wright Between the Jigs and the Reels
Lehto & Wright | |||||||||
Ye Mariners All is the debut CD from the Celtic/American, folk/folk rock band, Lehto & Wright. With the help of Matt Jacobs on percussion, John Wright and Steve Lehto have reworked traditional and folk material, combining unique arrangements with their own original pieces. With their second recording, the band has challenged the boundaries of the traditional folk genre, as it is molded by their diverse influences and born anew. The recording includes newly arranged traditional Irish, English and American songs and tunes including Pete Seeger's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy." Again the boundaries of folk and folk-rock are redefined in the trio's third release, A Game of Chess. The recording includes two pieces penned by Steve Lehto, "Antietam" and "Air," in addition to the 15 minute epic, "Ten Long Years." Lehto and Wright continue on their quest of molding tradition in their fourth release. This album includes the use of a string quartet on the Lehto-penned "The Earl of Otherwhere," as well as the reworked and highly-praised "John Riley." Announcing the release of Live at the Focal Point, the fifth release from the critically acclaimed band and their first live recording. Captured one November night at the famous Focal Point in St. Louis, the double CD set features many of the band's most popular selections from their first four studio releases.
The songs and tunes are represented here with a mostly acoustic presentation and a few electric guitars and drums carefully placed throughout. This is a good document of a Lehto and Wright live show at that time and conveys the interaction and energy shared between the musicians and the audience. A great signpost for an exciting live band with more to follow, Live at the Focal Point is a must for any Lehto and Wwell as any fan of live music.
